Corsair XMS4400 1GB TwinX Memory Kit Review

Conclusion

Well, Corsair promised to deliver PC4400 performance at moderately tight latencies, and they did it!

Although the XMS4400 TwinX modules was a poor overclocker, despite a voltage bump and looser timings, 275MHz is not an easy achievement for Corsair or even for many users.

It's quite an achievement for Corsair to push TCCD chips, that are only rated for 500MHz DDR operation at 3-4-4-8, to run at 550MHz DDR at the tighter timings of 2.5-4-4-8. Don't forget, when you run the chips above 250MHz, you are already overclocking them! The official Corsair clock speed of 275MHz is actually 10% higher than Samsung's official clock speed.

Even if it's very overclockable, higher clock speeds may be pointless for many users. Because of bottlenecks in other parts of the system, many users won't even hit 275MHz (550MHz DDR), much less even higher clock speeds.

In fact, our testbed were not totally stable at 275MHz when we tested it with Prime 95 Blend Test, which is one of the toughest test to pass. So, for such users, the overclockability of such fast memory is a moot point.

However, their ultra-low latency performance is pretty much the same as other Samsung TCCD modules we have tested before. That can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you see it. In our opinion, if you are looking to run your memory modules at ultra-low latencies, you are just wasting money buying these modules.

Also, unlike the Pro series or the latest XPERT series, there isn't any 'bling bling' factor. So, if you are looking for something to spruce up your case mod, sorry.

The Corsair XMS4400 TwinX modules are really targeted at serious overclockers who do not care how their systems look. All they want is performance, and that's what these modules deliver.

These are the fastest modules that Corsair offers, although other manufacturers like G.Skill are already selling DDR600 modules. However, before you start Googling for the G.Skill DDR600 modules, please remember that you are very unlikely to hit DDR600 without specially selected parts and quite a bit of luck!

So, if you have the money and are willing to invest in expensive memory modules, the Corsair XMS4400 TwinX kit is definitely one of the top pick!

Pros :
  • Very high rated clock speed.
  • Relatively low running voltage for such high speed.
  • Cons :
    • Poor overclocking at tight timings.
    • Doesn't overclock well with additional voltage.
