Press Briefing to Technology Briefing

I attended the Seagate Press Briefing on the 20th of June 2005. This was a short press briefing to give the media insight about Seagate's new products, its directions, presence in the world market as well as company growth.

The Press Briefing was held at Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur in a rather small but comfy Penang Room. The registration took place from 10.30 to 11am. I was there at 10.30am and was warmly greeted by Ng Yen Yen and Premalata who are both from the Public Relations department in Seagate.

I was given the Press Kit and then shown to the room. There, I met Fok from CHiP Malaysia.

The Press Briefing

The Press Briefing was done by Jim Chirico, Seagate's Senior Vice President and General Manager of Asia Operations. He started his presentation promptly at 11am where he briefly informs the press on Seagate's share market and its innovations with regards to the new products.

Jim Chirico speaking

He stressed a lot on Seagate's interests in increasing its involvement in the Consumer Electronics (CE) market. He mentioned that the CE market will, in the coming years, constitute a larger amount of Seagate's overall market share. The CE market is still a young market but there has already been a lot of progress and as such, Seagate's involvement will be inevitable.

Seagate has more than tripled its number of products, since 2002, to cater to this wide range of market.

Powerpoint presentation

The hard disk industry, he mentioned, is in its early stages of a long-term growth cycle powered by CE applications. This is supported by the fact that there has been a steady increase in content growth with data created at a rate of 1.4GB / person / year in the US.

400 Petabytes of email have been sent out in 2004 and Apple alone shipped 4 Petabytes of iTunes music files in 2004. Seagate is meeting the demands of this industry by expanding its storage capacity.
