As you can see, the new GeForce 7950 GX2 is a pretty impressive card when it comes to benchmark numbers. As far as NVIDIA's own numbers go, it totally blows the ATI Radeon X1900 XTX out of water.
However, it is certainly not a true enhancement of the G71 architecture. What NVIDIA did was combine two GeForce 7900 GT/GTX cards together. To avoid encroaching on the sales of the GeForce 7900 GTX SLI, NVIDIA gave them smaller coolers and and ran them at lower clock speeds.
So, while many may think of them as GeForce 7900 GTX SLI running on a single slot, that's actually not the case. The GeForce 7950 GX2 will perform better than the single GeForce 7900 GTX card but poorer than the GeForce 7900 GTX SLI.
Still, the overclocking potential the GeForce 7950 GX2 will be a great draw for many hardware enthusiasts. Its GPUs are virtually underclocked at just 500MHz. If they can even overclock the GeForce 7950 GX2 by 15-20%, they will essentially achieve the performance of the GeForce 7900 GTX SLI without the stupendously high cost.
