The Microsoft Windows 7 SKU Strategy Revealed Rev. 5.2

Two Primary Versions

Microsoft will offer Windows 7 in two primary versions - Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. The total number of SKUs will be cut down to just 5, with two of those SKUs limited to emerging markets.

a) Consumers

  • Windows 7 Home Premium will be the recommended choice for consumers.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium provides customers with a rich PC experience that delivers unified entertainment, and easy ways to connect to other PCs and devices, all in a visually rich environment that makes every day use of your PC simpler and more engaging.

  • For consumers who want additional features, Microsoft recommends Windows 7 Professional.

b) Small Business

  • As mentioned in our November 25th update, Microsoft will rename the commercial offering (previously Business edition) to Windows 7 Professional. This will make the purchase decision easier for many end-users (e.g. students / governments) who need the management features but do not think of themselves as a business.

  • Windows 7 Professional is the clear option and recommended choice for small business.

  • For small businesses that need access to a managed network, Windows 7 Professional improves productivity both inside and outside of the office, helps protect critical data, and connects in any networking environment.

  • Some prosumers may choose Windows 7 Professional if they need those additional features at home.

c) Midsize to Large Business

  • Either Windows 7 Ultimate via OEM channels, or Windows 7 Enterprise through the Volume Licensing Software Assurance Program.

  • Microsoft will continue to offer Windows 7 Ultimate via the OEM channel for enthusiasts that "want it all" and customers that want the security features such as BitLocker only found in Windows 7 Enterprise.
