Western Digital 750 GB Caviar SE16 Serial ATA Hard Drive Review

The Hard Drive

The Western Digital Caviar SE16 hard drives look just like their Caviar GP counterparts (e.g. 1TB Caviar GP). It's easy to confuse the two if you do not compare them. The Caviar SE16 hard drives have a white label with a small yellow strip. The Caviar GP hard drives, on the other hand, have a large green strip at the bottom of the label with the words - GreenPower Hard Drives By WD.

The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model and capacity, and jumper settings. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Thailand in May 2007. The label is where you look for the drive's serial number in case you need to RMA it. Of course, we hope that never happens!

Western Digital had also printed a guide to the drive's jumper settings on the label. This makes it easy to configure the drive (if you need to). Unfortunately, as you will see later, Western Digital did not include the jumper.

Usable Capacity

The 750 GB Caviar SE16 officially has a formatted capacity of 750,156 MB. We checked that out by formatting it in NTFS using Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 750,153,363,456 bytes. This is very slightly (2.5 MB) lower than the official formatted capacity.

With about 117 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity was only 750,036,549,632 bytes, or just above the 750 GB.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
