The WD Scorpio Blue 640 GB

The WD Scorpio Blue 640 GB hard disk drive looks like any other 2.5" mobile hard drive, with a label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside.

The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model, capacity and serial number. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Thailand on August 31, 2009.

The underside is SOP for Western Digital - completely bare of any surface-mounted components.

Usable Capacity

This Western Digital Scorpio Blue drive officially has a formatted capacity of 640,135 MB. We checked that out by formatting both in NTFS using Microsoft Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 640,132,575,232 bytes. This is slightly (132 MB) higher than the official formatted capacity. With about 113 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity remained slightly above 640 GB.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
