Seagate 750GB Barracuda ES Enterprise Hard Drive Review

Seagate 750GB Barracuda ES Serial ATA Hard Drive

Seagate has always been at the forefront of desktop hard drives. Not only were they constantly coming out with higher capacity hard drives, they were also pushing out new technologies like perpendicular recording. So, we are not surprised that they would extend the benefits of their expertise in desktop drives to their enterprise solutions.

The result of their efforts, the Barracuda ES enterprise hard drive, offers not only a much higher capacity but also lower cost than other enterprise-grade hard drives. In other words, the Barracuda ES melds the advantages of desktop hard drives with the reliability of enterprise-grade hard drives.

Like all new desktop hard drives from Seagate, the Barracuda ES makes use of Perpendicular Recording technology to achieve its remarkable capacity. The use of perpendicular recording also gave the drive a much greater areal density, which has the benefit of a higher platter-to-buffer transfer rate. In fact, that's just what we saw in our test results - significantly higher transfer rates than the Barracuda 7200.9 hard drive.

However, performance or even capacity is not the criteria for selecting the Barracuda ES. The Barracuda ES is virtually the enterprise twin of the Barracuda 7200.10 desktop hard drive. Both drives offer the same capacity and virtually the same performance. The only difference between the two is the higher rotational vibration tolerance and reliability, and of course a higher price tag in the Barracuda ES.

If you are a desktop user looking for fast drive with a really large capacity, then the Barracuda 7200.10 would be something more up your alley. The Barracuda ES is really for those who are looking for a more cost-effective storage solution for their servers. It not only offers the greater reliability required for 24x7 operations, it also offers much greater storage capacity and lower cost than competing enterprise hard drives.

Incidentally, like the other Barracuda hard drives, the Barracuda ES also offers a magnificent 5-year limited warranty. While this does not guarantee that this hard drive won't quit on you in the next five years, it does show the amount of confidence Seagate has in the reliability of this model.

Our Review System

Tech ARP is committed to developing new ways to improve your experience with us. As part of our continuous efforts to improve the value of our reviews to you, we are implementing a multi-tier review system.

This review system is designed to allow you to quickly receive information on the latest hardware or software. This new system also allows you to quickly get the gist of the review without reading through it. This can be very useful, especially in situations where you need to make a quick purchase decision.

In this new system, we start with a Product Overview whenever a company sends us a press release about their latest product. We shift through extraneous PR-talk to create a straightforward summary of the product's features as well as specifications. This allows you to quickly find out all the pertinent details about the product, without reading through official press releases.

When we receive the product for review, we will quickly take photos of it and create a Pictorial Review. The purpose of a pictorial review is to allow you, the reader, to quickly examine the product visually. It may help you make better purchase decisions, especially if you cannot wait for the full review.

After thorough testing, we will post a Comprehensive Review of the product. This adds on to the pictorial review with comprehensive test results and our final conclusion on the product.

But no matter whether you are reading a Pictorial Review or a Comprehensive Review, you can always read the summary of the review as well as examine the product's specifications right on the first page. In all our new reviews, we will maintain the first page as a Product Overview page. If the product is listed in PriceGrabber, you can also check out the lowest price online.

We hope this new review system will make your experience a lot more enjoyable and informative!
