The 256 GB OCZ Vector SSD
The 256 GB OCZ Vector solid-state drive has the official part number of VTR1-25SAT3-256G. It is a slim 2.5" drive which will fit into any standard 2.5" drive bay, whether in a desktop PC or a notebook. Despite the slim 7 mm profile, it feels rather heavy, probably due to its cast aluminium case, which does feel solid... like an Apple MacBook Pro!
OCZ definitely went to some lengths to make this drive look stylish with a very nice blue and black sticker on the top plate. The underside is bare with just a white label listing the drive's place of manufacture, part number and serial number.
Although it has a SATA 6 Gb/s interface, it will readily run on computers that only support SATA 3 Gb/s or even SATA 1.5 Gb/s. The downside is the drive will be throttled by the slower interface and will not perform to its full potential.
The 3.5" Desktop Bay Adaptor
If you need to install it into a 3.5" drive bay, OCZ has conveniently included a 3.5" adaptor (with 8 screws) with the drive. The four smaller screws are for attaching the OCZ Vector to the adaptor, and the four larger screws are for screwing the adaptor into the 3.5" drive bay.
Usable Capacity
This OCZ Vector solid state drive officially has a formatted capacity of 256 GB. We checked that out by formatting both in NTFS using Microsoft Windows 7.
The actual formatted capacity was 256,058,060,800 bytes. This is slightly (~58 MB) more than the official storage capacity. With about 102 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity was about 44 MB less than 256 GB.
Let's take a look at its specifications.
