Portable hard disk drives have become commoditized, with price and storage capacity being the main considerations for many consumers. Western Digital hopes to differentiate their My Passport Ultra Metal / Anniversary Edition by cladding it in a stylish aluminium case, and bundling it with their premium SmartWare Pro software. The Pro version not only tacks on the ability to protect the drive contents with 256-bit encryption, it also includes an automatic backup feature that supports Dropbox.

Thanks to its metal case, the My Passport Ultra Metal / Anniversary Edition is slightly smaller than the plastic-clad 2 TB Western Digital My Passport in all three dimensions. Check out the comparison below :

In the pictures below, we compared the My Passport Ultra Metal / Anniversary Edition to the 2 TB My Passport (left or top) and the 1 TB My Passport Slim (right or bottom). Although it is hard to see, the My Passport Ultra Anniversary Edition is 2.2 mm thinner, 2 mm narrower and 1 mm shorter than the standard 2 TB My Passport.

On the other hand, the aluminium case seemed to add a little more heft - the My Passport Ultra Metal / Anniversary Edition was 10 g heavier than the standard 2 TB My Passport.
