Transfer Rate Range
This chart shows you the range of platter-to-buffer transfer rates from the innermost track to the outermost track. In other words, it shows you the range of disk transfer rates of the hard drives (from minimum and maximum).
Even though they are physically the same, the 4 TB Red Pro appears to have edged out the 4 TB Western Digital Black and the 4 TB Western Digital Re, particularly at the outermost tracks. At the outermost tracks, the Red Pro drive was slightly slower than the Black drive but faster than the Re drive.
Platter Transfer Rate Profile
The platter profile of the 4 TB Western Digital Red Pro drive we received was very good. There were very few dips in throughput that would signify a significant use of replacement sectors. Lots of them would point to poor platter quality.
We also compared its platter profile to that of the 4 TB Western Digital Red. The new Red Pro drive uses lower-density 800 GB platters while the Red drive uses higher-density 1 TB platters. However, the Red drive spins at just 5400 RPM while the new Red Pro spins its platters at 7200 RPM. This comparison shows that the Red Pro has a performance advantage due to its higher spindle even though it's using lower-density platters.
Business Disk WinBench 99
The 4 TB Western Digital Red Pro did well in this test, coming in second, right behind the 4 TB Western Digital Black, and far ahead of the 4 TB Western Digital Re (WD4000FYYZ) and the 2 TB Western Digital Caviar Black (6 Gbps).
