The Base
The Func sUrface1030 Archetype came with a black plastic base. Made from polycarbonate, it has a soft feel that Func describes as "suede-like". It actually feels like hard rubber but either way, it certainly feels nicer than plain polycarbonate.
Although you may think that a two-piece design may mean a thick mouse pad, it's actually not really true. The Archetype is only 1/8" or 3.2 mm thick! Flipping over the base, you will see the Func sUrface1030 label on the underside of the base.
You will also see six plastic-like feet which are sticky to provide grip to the base so that it won't move when you are vigorously mousing about on the surface.
There are also two finger holes in the base. They allow you to quickly push out the mousing surface component for quick switches between the two surfaces.
At the upper end of the base's underside, there are two notches. These notches are for the mouse cord clip. We will be taking a closer look at it later.
Although it's made from hard polycarbonate, the base is actually flexible. As a matter of fact, the one we received was a little warped at the sides. We tried bending it back but it didn't work. We will have to see if the warping affects its performance.
