Dismantling The Card
We dismantled the cooler to have a look under it, as well as to allow us to closely inspect the heatsink design and fan.
It wasn't very difficult. In fact, there were only eleven large spring-loaded screws and two small screws to remove and voilà! the cooler pops off!
Wow... That's a really BIG chip! The large GPU with its thick shim really stands out on the card.
The large thermal paste-smudged GeForce 8800 GTX GPU is flanked on three sides by the twelve GDDR3 memory chips. NVIDIA used thermal tapes for the memory chips though.
There's also a small chip placed near the bracket. We will look into that chip a little later in the review.
Here's a closer look at the GPU. Doesn't look like much, all smudged up in thermal paste, but that's the GeForce 8800 GTX right there.
The other two pictures show what the GeForce 8800 GTX will look like from the top and bottom, without the thermal paste, of course.
