Kingston SSDNow V (Gen 2) 30 GB Solid State Drive Review

The Kingston SSDNow V 30 GB SSD

The Kingston SSDNow V 30 GB solid state drive, which is also known by its official model number of SNV125-S2/30GB, looks like any other 2.5" hard disk drive. It was certainly designed to conform to the 2.5" form factor, allowing it to easily replace any 2.5" hard disk drive. But you will know that this is no hard disk drive the moment you hold it in your hands - it's as light as a feather!

As it only serves to protect the NAND chips, controller and circuit board inside from static damage, the case is flat on both sides. The top has a simple label that lists the model number, capacity, and place of manufacture, amongst other things. The underside is completely featureless.

Usable Capacity

This Kingston SSDNow V drive officially has a formatted capacity of 30 GB. We checked that out by formatting both in NTFS using Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 30,014,435,328 bytes. This is slightly (~14 MB) above than the official storage capacity. With about 95 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity was about 80 MB below 30 GB.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
