Conclusion
We were impressed with the demonstration Kobayashi-san put out for us. Sure, the ThinkPad hung for a couple of seconds after the fall. Even Kobayashi-san was surprised by the lack of response. But at least it survived the drop and went back to running as if the drop never happened.
Of course, we cannot be certain that the hard drive was not harmed at all during the test. It may have survived this drop and possibly many more before eventually dying. But one thing is for certain - an unprotected hard drive would have died after such a high impact.
The water spill test was no less impressive. The water flowed directly to the drainage holes without any getting into the chassis. Other notebooks may also feature a similar design, but that little demonstration alone was far more convincing than all the brochures and marketing materials we have ever read.
It's one thing to read about it, it's quite another thing to see it demonstrated right in front of you. For that, we have to sincerely thank Kobayashi-san for taking the time and effort to fly all the way from Japan to demonstrate his team's efforts to us.
