Zalman ZM600-HP 600W Power Supply Review

Features

This latest power supply from Zalman boasts impressive specifications right from the box itself. The key features that potential buyers should take note of are :

  1. Heatpipe-cooled main rectifier (output) diodes
  2. Four rectifier diodes for 12V output
  3. Two bridge diodes for reduced heat generated in AC to DC conversion
  4. Four independent 12V outputs
  5. Active PFC (Power Factor Correction) of up to 99%
  6. Maximum efficiency of 84% (230VAC, Full and Typical Load)

The most important feature here is the presence of FOUR 12V rails. These rails are highly important for today's demand for 12V power, especially from dual-core processors and power-hungry graphics cards.

The four 12V rails here are specifically meant for the CPU, graphics card, motherboard, and peripheral components. With each 12V rail capable of handling up to 16A, this gives you a total capacity of 42A on the 12V rails. The Zalman ZM600-HP will power up almost anything you throw at it.

Looking at the specifications itself, we can easily tell that this Zalman power supply is not just a run-of-the-mill 600W power supply.

First of all, the increase in the number of vital internal components, especially the rectifier and bridge diodes, improve stability, reliability and thermal dissipation.

In addition, an increased maximum efficiency of 84% (at 230 VAC, both full and typical load) allows it to run cooler and reduce power consumption, compared to other power supplies out there.

Last but not least, this Zalman power supply supports Active PFC with a power factor of 99%. That is indeed quite an achievement.

Defect

Now, let's take a closer look at the Zalman ZM600-HP power supply!

When we gave it a once-over, we noticed a slight dent on the front plate, near the sockets for the modular cables.

As the power supply came packed within a really solid cardboard box that didn't look like it got bashed up, it was likely caused during the packaging process.

It is probably a very rare occurrence but we hope that Zalman will look into it as this power supply is no cheap, run-of-the-mill power supply.
