Testing Methodology

We tested exclusively in Windows Vista, with the latest updates. We chose these four games for benchmarking :

  • Crysis Warhead
  • Far Cry 2
  • Supreme Commander
  • Fallout 3

Crysis Warhead is latest instalment of the Crysis franchise. Both Crysis and Crysis Warhead are currently the most strenous tests of a graphics card's capability. It is the perfect performance benchmark for desktop sadists. If you want to learn how to use it as a benchmark, take a look at the Crysis Benchmarking Guide.

Far Cry 2 is a new first-person shooter game. Like Crysis Warhead, it will do well in testing the graphics cards' capabilities.

Supreme Commander is a DirectX 9 real-time strategy game. It is a very CPU-intensive game and will serve well as an example of a CPU-limited game. If you want to learn how to use it as a benchmark, take a look at the Supreme Commander Benchmarking Guide.

Cryostasis Tech Demo is a technology demo based on the upcoming Cryostasis game. This tech demo is highly skewed towards NVIDIA graphics cards as it supports PhysX and appears to generate incredible amounts of physics calculations, to the point of crippling even an Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition CPU. However, it is a good test of the potential of PhysX and any future game that may feature more realistic physic calculations.

All games were tested at 1920 x 1200 at 16x AF and no AA, unless stated otherwise. A minimum of 5 test runs were performed at each setting. The three closest results were taken and averaged to obtain the final frame rate. If the test results varied too much, the entire test was repeated.
