The WD Caviar Green AFD 1 TB

The WD Caviar Green AFD (Advanced Format Drive) 1 TB hard disk drive looks like any other 3.5" desktop hard drive, with a label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside.

The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model and capacity, and Advanced Format Drive warning. Do remember, if you're using an older operating system like Windows XP or Windows 98, you will need to use the WD Align software to ensure the drive performs properly. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Thailand in February 2010.

The underside is SOP for Western Digital - completely bare of any surface-mounted components.

 

Usable Capacity

This Western Digital Caviar Green AFD 1 TB drive officially has a formatted capacity of 1,000,204 MB. We checked that out by formatting both in NTFS using Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 1,000,202,039,296 bytes. This is slightly (2 MB) lower than the official formatted capacity. With about 124 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity remained slightly above 1 TB.
