XFX 7900GT REview

The XFX GeForce 7900 GT Extreme Edition

The reason why XFX gave this GeForce 7900 GT card the Extreme Edition moniker is because it is a factory-overclocked card.

Running at 520MHz core and 750MHz memory, they effectively overclocked the core by 15.6% and the memory by 13.6%. This is certainly a big advantage over regular GeForce 7900 GT cards.

Surprising though is the small size of GPU cooler. In fact, it's so small it doesn't even cover or cool the memory chips!

What this really tells us is just how cool the new GPU runs, compared to the previous generation.

In fact, when we compare it against the older GeForce 7800 GT, you can see that the older card used a much large cooler. Of course, they are really very different cards.

Even though the GeForce 7800 GT is the GeForce 7900 GT's equivalent for the GeForce 7800 series, some of its pipelines were cut.

The GeForce 7900 GT, on the other hand, has as many pixel pipelines as the GeForce 7900 GTX. To differentiate this lower-end card from its big brother, NVIDIA only resorted to giving it half the framebuffer and lower core and memory clockspeeds.

So, when you think about it, NVIDIA certainly did a great job with the GeForce 7900 GT. Not only does it have more pixel pipelines and run at a higher speed, it can do so without the need for a more powerful cooler.

Like most cards, the back of the XFX GeForce 7900 GT Extreme Edition is pretty clean.

Although there are many mounting holes in the PCB, the small cooler only needs four of them. But the extra mounting holes will give you more flexibility if you are thinking of using a third-party cooler.

You can also see that this card has a two DVI ports. Thanks to the included DVI-to-VGA adaptors, you will be able to enjoy them even if you only have analog monitors.

For a card of this caliber, the SLI connector at the upper right corner is a certainty. Heck, even the GeForce 7300 GT comes with an SLI connector!
