What Else Was Improved?
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 features many of the same improvements we saw in the GeForce GTX 580. First of all, the new GF110 GPU is more efficient - doing more work while using fewer watts of power. The GeForce GTX 570 has the same number of CUDA cores as the GeForce GTX 480 but uses only 219 watts of power. That means it consumes 31 watts (12.4%) less power even with a higher clock speed!
The lower power consumption as well as the new dual-slot cooler allowed NVIDIA to significantly reduce the noise level of the GeForce GTX 570, addressing one of the chief complaints about high-end graphics cards - noise. Of course, the large reduction in noise level is not entirely due to the slightly lower power consumption.
NVIDIA introduced a new cooler design in the GeForce GTX 580 which feature a custom-designed vapour chamber in the heatsink and a new adaptive GPU fan control. The same dual-slot cooler is used in the GeForce GTX 570 as well.
Finally, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 sports new hardware monitoring controllers that not only monitors its power input in real time, it also dynamically adjusts the GeForce GTX 570's performance (and power consumption) depending on the load. It also ensures that the GPU thermal output and power consumption is kept within specifications.
When we first wrote about the GeForce GTX 580, we noted that it was only an evolutionary upgrade which did not justify the spawning of a new GeForce series. However, the GeForce GTX 570 is a different matter altogether because it offers all of those improvements with performance that is superior to the GeForce GTX 480 at a much lower price point. That makes the GeForce GTX 570 an truly irresistible buy, which is something we cannot say about its bigger brother, the GeForce GTX 580.
