ATTO Disk Benchmark

ATTO Disk Benchmark is a free benchmark that allows you to compare the performance of the solid state drive using a variety of transfer sizes. The total size of each test is limited to 256 MB, which is good enough for most intent and purposes.

I/O Comparison

In this test, we compared the basic I/O performance of the OCZ RevoDrive 80 GB solid state drive.

Compressible Data Set
- Minimum Read Speed : 7 MB/s
- Maximum Read Speed : 455 MB/s
- Minimum Write Speed : 9 MB/s
- Maximum Write Speed : 463 MB/s

Non-Compressible Data Set
- Minimum Read Speed : 7 MB/s
- Maximum Read Speed : 294 MB/s
- Minimum Write Speed : 8 MB/s
- Maximum Write Speed : 145 MB/s

With compressible data, its throughput increased rapidly as the transfer block size increased from 512 bytes to 128 KB. Thereafter, increasing the transfer block size had a much smaller effect on its transfer rate. The 80 GB OCZ RevoDrive had a maximum read speed of 455 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 463 MB/s.

When we switched to non-compressible data, the OCZ RevoDrive only managed to deliver a maximum read speed of 294 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 145 MB/s. Also, the write speed plateaued when the block size was 8 KB or larger.

Multiple I/O Comparison

In this test, we compared the 80 GB OCZ RevoDrive's ability to handle 8 simultaneous I/Os.

Compressible Data Set
- Minimum Read Speed : 24 MB/s
- Maximum Read Speed : 533 MB/s
- Minimum Write Speed : 22 MB/s
- Maximum Write Speed : 473 MB/s

Non-Compressible Data Set
- Minimum Read Speed : 24 MB/s
- Maximum Read Speed : 533 MB/s
- Minimum Write Speed : 23 MB/s
- Maximum Write Speed : 468 MB/s

When we tested the RevoDrive with compressible data, its write speed plateaued when the block size hit 512 KB. Its read speed hit its peak with a block size of 512 KB and dropped a little at larger block sizes.

The picture was quite similar when we switched to non-compressible data. In fact, the peak read and write speeds for both compressible and non-compressible data were virtually similar. This shows that the SSD controller is the limitation when dealing with multiple simultaneous transactions. It actually negated the performance boost from the SandForce controller's data compression technology.
