Conclusion
When it comes to the mobile platform, Intel is certainly aggressive, and the launch of the new Sonoma platform reflects their non-stop development of the Centrino programme. And Intel is certainly very smart in doing so.
High performance mobile computing is fast becoming a major trend these days. Consumers, both business and home users, are tired of living with slow notebooks with short battery lives. Why should performance be compromised for battery life or light weight?
The Centrino initiative is certainly a step in the right direction. While we have not quite reached the goal of desktop-level performance with day-long battery life and absolutely no wires, we have come quite a long way.
We have already achieved wireless connectivity with support for WiFi. With WiFi hotpots fast popping up all over the world, having a WiFi-capable mobile platform definitely gives one an edge in today’s competitive world. In fact, WiFi is one of the main impetus pushing the sales of notebooks and PDAs.
In addition, the Centrino platforms have given us much better performance as well as increased battery life. With Sonoma, Intel is taking us further towards our goal of achieving desktop-level computing without wires and without worrying about battery life.
I’m personally looking forward to Intel’s next move.
