The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 Tech Report

Almost a month to the day they launched the GeForce GTX 770, NVIDIA finally launched the GeForce GTX 760, which is based on the same GK104 GPU used in the GeForce 770, and in the GeForce GTX 680 last year. However, it is crippled in many ways.

Instead of a full complement of 8 SMX units with 1536 CUDA cores that the GeForce GTX 770 boasts, the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 only has 6 SMX units with a total of 1152 CUDA cores. In addition, it has a 66 MHz (6.3%) slower base clock with a 52 MHz (4.8%) slower boost clock, and a 251 MHz (14.3%) slower memory clock.

Other than the intentional throttling of its performance, the GeForce GTX 760 boasts the same features as the GeForce GTX TITAN, the GeForce GTX 780 and of course, its immediate superior, the GeForce GTX 770 - including the newer GPU Boost 2.0, which gives you more advanced controls for overclocking, fan control, and hardware monitoring.

Now, let's get down to the NVIDIA presentation. They started it with some light fluff - basically, assurances that PC gaming is still the best gaming experience possible for now, and into the future.

Of course, Forbes knows about gaming as much as Bernie Madoff knows about business ethics. Just in case that's not good enough, NVIDIA backs that up with some polling data to show just how important the PC gaming market will continue to be. Was there any doubt?

What it really boils down to is this message - NVIDIA through their new GeForce 700 series, is ready to take a big, BIG chunk of the PC gaming market...

To help them with that task, they are introducing the new GeForce GTX 760 to conquer the popular $250 price point market.
