APIOTEK 12-in-1 Express Card Adapter Pictorial Review

The Genesys GL819 Controller

The APIOTEK 12-in-1 Express Card Adapter uses the Genesys GL819 flash card reader controller. In addition to formats supported by the adapter, the Genesys GL819 also supports formats like the CompactFlash Type I and Type II, MicroDrive, SmartMedia and High-Speed Memory Stick.

Its embedded 8051 microcontroller runs at 60MHz, with a processing cycle of 12 clocks per instruction. It's no speed freak, but you only need it to read flash media. It also comes with 256 bytes of internal SRAM and 4KB of external SRAM for quick data access.

This particular controller also supports external flashing of its firmware. However, it's unlikely you will see firmware upgrades from either Genesys or APIOTEK, unless there's a critical bug in the original firmware.

If you are interested to see the details of the flash media formats that the Genesys GL819 supports, take a look here.
