The Scorpio Black WD7500BPKT

The Western Digital Scorpio Black 750 GB (WD7500BPKT) looks like any other 2.5" mobile hard disk drive, with a label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside. The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model, storage capacity and serial number. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Thailand on May 22, 2010.

Unlike the older BEKT models, the new BPKT models feature higher-density platters, partly boosted by Advanced Format Technology (AFT). The new platters can store 375 GB of data (187.5 GB per side), compared to just 250 GB (125 GB per side) on earlier models. That's a 50% boost in areal density.

Usable Capacity

This Western Digital Scorpio Black 750 GB hard disk drive officially has a formatted capacity of 750,156 MB. We checked that out by formatting both in NTFS using Microsoft Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 750,153,582,456 bytes. This is slightly (~3.5 MB) lower than the official formatted capacity. With about 117 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity remained slightly above 750 GB.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
