GeForce Go 7900
NVIDIA gave us a run down of the latest series of GPUs for notebooks - the GeForce Go 7900! It begins with the launch of the GeForce Go 7900 GTX but eventually, there will be a whole series of GeForce Go 7 GPUs, right down to the GeForce Go 7300!
Here's a cursory look at the new GeForce Go 7900 GTX's specifications. It certainly looks like a faster version of the GeForce Go 7800 GTX, but NVIDIA says they did tweak the design, allowing it to do more work per clock cycle.
Here are some preliminary benchmarks from NVIDIA. The first chart pits the new GeForce Go 7900 GTX against its older brother, the GeForce Go 7800 GTX and the ATI M58 Pro (Mobility Radeon X1800 XT). The second chart is of the GeForce Go 7900 GS against the GeForce Go 7800 and the ATI M58 (Mobility Radeon X1800).
The GeForce Go 7900 GTX can also be paired in SLI. According to NVIDIA, the SLI solution will offer about a 75% boost in performance over a single GeForce Go 7900 GTX GPU.
Although the new GPU comes with the same PowerMizer 6.0 technology built into the GeForce Go 7800 GTX, the new 90nm process used to create the GeForce Go 7900 chips will allow it to use less power. In addition, it has an Active State Link Management which dynamically powers down PCI Express lanes that are not required.
As you can see from this roadmap, while they have just announced the GeForce Go 7900 GTX, it will only be availabe in the second quarter of this year. The GeForce Go 7 series will initially arrive in the form of the Go 7600, Go 7400 and Go 7300. Even the GeForce Go 7900 GS will only be available in the second quarter.
On a side note, NVIDIA is also launching a new mobile workstation GPU - the Quadro NVS 110m. Unfortunately, we do not have any details on it.
