Western Digital Black² (WD1001X06XDTL) Dual Drive Review Rev. 2.0

IO Meter (HDD)

We compared the HDD component of the WD Black² (WD1001X06XDTL) to the 1 TB Western Digital Scorpio Blue (WD10JPVT). For more performance comparisons, please take a look at The Hard Disk Drive Performance Comparison Guide.

Throughput (Random Access)

Although we noted that the 500 GB WD Blue Slim is faster than the full-height 1 TB Scorpio Blue (WD10JPVT) drive because of its higher density platters, the 1 TB Blue Slim component of the Western Digital Black² seems to be slightly slower than its full-height equivalent, the 1 TB Scorpio Blue (WD10JPVT). This could be due to the use of the Marvell 88SM9642 SATA bridge.

Throughput (Sequential Access)

When it came to sequential transfers, the higher density platters used in the Western Digital Black² allowed it to deliver slightly better performance than its full-height equivalent, the 1 TB Scorpio Blue (WD10JPVT). However, we noticed that it did very badly at small sequential reads.
