Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard Review

Design & Built

I have this mantra about design - that less is more. The Logitech G15 managed to strike a balance between the bling bling and conservative approaches.

On one hand, it has some aggressive trims that are eye-catching. On the other hand, its two-tone colour allows it to look good and conform with both black- or cream-coloured PCs.

I call it the best of both worlds. With its black and silver colour scheme, it blends in well with my Dell 2407 monitor, Razer eXactMat mouse pad and Logitech G5 mouse.

The keyboard's underside has cable channels that allow you to route most wires under the keyboard. This is a welcomed feature, although I personally don't think I would be using it anytime soon.

For some reason, the G15 is a bit heftier than other keyboards. Not just in size, but also in weight. Then again, why worry about the weight when you aren't going to lug it around in the first place? So, I guess the weight isn't really an issue.

The general build quality of this keyboard is outstanding. There isn't a lack of stiffness or rigidity that I feel plagues other keyboards. It is rock solid. Kudos to Logitech for building something that isn't flimsy. It certainly feels like it can take take a lot of punishment before showing signs of fatigue or damage.

General Usage

The greatest test of any keyboard isn't the challenges it may face once in a while, but rather the challenges that it faces all the time. For example, more mundane activities like typing, surfing the web, staving off angry girlfriends with fast replies, downloading smut, trolling forums and other boring things.

To kick things off, let me talk about the feel of the keyboard and the key presses. Unlike the rickety feel that my old MX Elite gave me from Day 1, the G15 gives a far more refined experience and superb tactile feedback. Just like my initial opinions when I first tried it out. Although I wouldn't go as far to say that the feedback is as good as an Apple keyboard, I would say that it is superior to a vast majority of PC keyboards out there. This makes typing a pleasure rather than a chore.

Even though moving from my older British-based keyboard made me hit the G key, when I wanted to hit the CTRL key, I soon got used to the keyboard format. After just 3 days, I no longer had any issues with it. The action on the keys was buttery smooth after the crisp action of the initial press of the key gives way.

The media keys are a bit harder to describe. They're a bit harder to press and have an edgier action than my old keyboard. Of course, the keys themselves are much smaller. Although I think Logitech got it wrong by making the media keys smaller, shorter and more tightly packed, I can understand the reasons why. But I still believe Logitech could have done better here. Since I'm a frequent user of media keys, I can tell you how putting a little effort into these keys can make a big difference.

The wrist rest included on the keyboard has a nice texture and incline to it, although I would have been happier with something softer and with better contours, like the wrist rest in Microsoft's new 3000 series of comfort keyboards. Maybe Logitech should start selling those because I really like to rest my hands on something soft between bouts of typing.

After the initial learning period, typing on the keyboard becomes natural and doesn't seem like the big hassle it was when I first migrated to it. If you ask me, it is a certainly much better than my old keyboard in many aspects.
