Western Digital Caviar Green (WD30EZRSDTL) 3 TB Hard Disk Drive Review Rev. 2.0

The 3 TB WD Caviar Green (WD30EZRSDTL)

The Western Digital WD30EZRSDTL differs from the similar but newer WD30EZRX hard disk drive in two important aspects:

  • The WD30EZRSDTL comes with a Rocket 620 SATA controller card, which is necessary if you wish to use this hard disk drive with a non-UEFI motherboard.
  • The WD30EZRSDTL has a SATA 3 Gbps interface, while the WD30EZRX has a SATA 6 Gbps interface.

We found out from our own tests that the WD30EZRX boasts a slightly higher spindle speed - about 11% faster according to our own tests. However, we understand that newer WD30EZRSDTL drives also feature the slightly higher spindle speed.

The WD30EZRSDTL hard disk drive itself looks very similar to the WD30EZRX, with the same white and green label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside. The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model and capacity. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Malaysia on September 18, 2010.

Do note that while this is an Advanced Format drive, there is no warning about using WD Align with older operating systems like Windows XP. This is because this drive does not "support" older operating systems like Windows XP. You can use this drive in Windows XP or even Windows 98, but you will be limited to the first 2.1 TB.

Usable Capacity

This Western Digital Caviar Green 3 TB hard disk drive officially has a formatted capacity of 3,000,592 MB. We checked that out by formatting it in NTFS using Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 3,000,457,228,288 bytes. This is slightly (457 MB) higher than the official formatted capacity. With about 140 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity was about 317 MB above the rated 3 TB storage capacity.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
