Conclusion
The NZXT Tempest is a well-designed computer case. Designed with the gamer in mind, it comes with all the bells and whistles that we all expect - from removable hard drive bays to built-in intake and exhaust fans. Although case modders will probably not like the fact that the case comes with all chassis fans already in place, gamers will not mind. In fact, it would be better for them to buy an integrated solution like the Tempest and concentrate on gaming, than waste time modding the case.
The strategic placement of the 6 chassis fans definitely helps keep the components inside the Tempest cool. Our test results showed that the Tempest performed better than the Cooler Master RC-690. Our tests also showed that the side panel fan was a major contributor to the reduction of the graphics card's temperature. With the side panel fan, the GPU core temperature was reduced by about 18.3 %. Very nice!
Of course, the Tempest is not perfect. The lack of ventilation holes at the base of the case prevents the PSU from being installed in the inverted position. We had to install it with the intake fan facing upwards. This prevents it from drawing cool air from outside the case. Instead, it had to draw hot air circulating within the case.
In addition, NZXT still used screws to secure the expansion cards in place. In an age where most computer case manufacturers are shifting to tool-less systems, this seems like an anachronism although using screws do make for a more secure grip on the cards.
With that said, the NZXT Tempest is a well-designed case with many expansion options and certainly excellent interior air flow. If the few issues we mentioned do not bother you, it is certainly a case to consider, especially since it only costs about $100-120.
