Resources
The map of a typical Company of Heroes game is divided into sectors, where each sector grants a different resource. Sectors have to be physically connected to your HQ to generate resources.
This adds a planning element to the whole game. Be you the "Zerg rush" type or the Turtle, nearly all the maps supplied in the campaign and multiplayer modes have multiple options that cater to these playing styles.
The game never punishes you for having your own playing style. It doesn't matter whether you're into Panzer and infantry rushes, or building PaK 88s at the edge of your territory and pounding away at the enemies before slowly pushing inwards. The game just provides a level playing field, and it is up to you how you want use your resources.
Resources are gathered at a steady rate and depending on what you spend your command points on, you can give them a boost of special command abilities. In my view, that gives you a lot more flexibility in tailoring your force for different strategies.
Command Options
Both Axis and Allies have three branches you can choose. The Allies have the options of Airborne, Armor and Infantry commander, while the Axis having the Terror, Blitzkrieg and Defensive doctrines. Each option grants their own ability trees and units.
To my surprise, it worked out pretty well in most skirmish games, more so with the simple LAN games I've played. In a way it allows team mates to complement each other. In my view, all six commands are well-balanced and thus, makes for a really invigorating experience.
