The Card
The NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX takes up two slots, thanks to its massive heatpipe cooler. The cooler covers almost the entire front of the card. You can see the four heatpipes extending outwards at the top of the card. In comparison, the back of the card is totally bare.
The top half of the back plate is occupied by a row of vents. Unfortunately, the cooler exhausts hot air out both ends of the card, so only half gets vented out your case. The other half will recirculate within the case. The lower half of the back plate has a video-out port as well as two DVI ports.
The view from the end of the card shows you just how fine the aluminium fins are. You can also see the heatpipes going through them. The heatpipes allow faster and better transmission of heat from the base to these fins.
In the first picture above, you can see how the four heatpipes extend outwards from the heatsink base to the fins. The second picture shows the four ends of the heatpipes, nestled between the copper base and the aluminium heatsink.
Size Comparison
To give you a better idea of how big the card is, we compared the GeForce 7900 GTX with single slot cards like the GeForce 7900 GT and the GeForce 7600 GT.
The GeForce 7900 GTX is not only longer, it's also much thicker. The large and heavy aluminium cooler really adds bulk and heft to the card.
Now, let's go take a look under the huge cooler!
