SteelPad 5L Mouse Pad Review

The SteelPad 5L

This is what the new SteelPad 5L looks like. It is roughly rectangular in shape, with a slight concavity at the bottom. Although it's hard to tell from the picture, it's a really BIG mouse pad!

With a width of 380 mm (14.9") and a depth of 280 mm (11"), it's actually bigger than my BenQ Joybook 7000 notebook! To allow you to have a better feel for its size, we compared it against the Func sUrface1030 Archetype and Everglide Attack Optical mouse pads.

Incidentally, the Func sUrface1030 Archetype is almost as big as the Icemat 2nd Edition, the biggest mouse pad we tested in the past. But it was still dwarfed by the gigantic SteelPad 5L!

The SteelPad 5L with its surface area of approximately 1050 cm2 was certainly much larger than the Func sUrface1030 Archetype (640 cm2) or the the diminutive Everglide Attack Optical mouse pad. Even the Icemat 2nd Edition at 750 cm2 was no match for it. It was certainly the largest mouse pad we have ever tested to date!

The Mousing Surface

The mousing surface is adorn with a green organic motif, which we think is pretty cool. However, we wonder about the aesthetic value of these two labels.

Of course, this is a matter of personal preference. But whether you love the design or hate it, the SteelPad 5L is only available in this design and colour.

If you take a closer look at the mousing surface, you will be able to see the texture imparted by the plastic-coated cloth surface. It is this cloth surface that ensures precision and compatibility with various mousing technologies.

According to SteelSeries, this mouse pad has been tuned to ensure it works flawlessly with all kinds of mice, no matter whether it's using an opto-mechanical sensor or an optical sensor.

In fact, SteelSeries claimed they delayed the introduction of the SteelPad 5L by 3 months while they worked to ensure 100% compatibility with the latest mice using laser sensors. So, this mouse pad should work flawlessly, no matter what you throw at it!
