Intel's Desktop CPU Roadmap @ October, 2008
We have once again managed to get our hands on Intel's internal roadmap for their desktop processors. This is the latest roadmap, as of October 2008. We posted part of it in ED#103 : Intel To Launch New Core 2 Desktop Processors and in ED#102 : The Intel Core i7 Processor & Intel X58 Express Chipset Are Ready For Launch.
As we covered in our previous editorial, Intel would be launching the new Core i7-965 Extreme Edition, Core i7-940 and Core i7-920 processors at 9 am, Pacific Time, November 16, 2008. The three processors are expected to be superseded by faster processors in Q2, 2009.
Three speed grades of the future Intel Lynnfield processors are expected to be launched by Q3, 2009. There are no clock speed details of these three models right now, but here are some features of these Nehalem-based processors :
- Based on the Nehalem microarchitecture
- Uses the new LGA1160 socket
- Supports Intel Turbo Boost Technology
- Supports Intel Hyper-Threading Technology
- 4 Cores, 8 Threads
- 8 MB Intel SmartCache
- Integrated memory controller supporting two DDR3 channels
- Discrete graphics support for 1x16 or 2x8 PCI Express 2.0 slots
Not listed in the roadmap is the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 processor. It is scheduled to be released in December 2008. For more details, take a look here.
Update : The Intel Havendale Processor
The Intel Havendale processor, which is also based on the Nehalem microarchitecture, has been rescheduled to debut in early Q1, 2010, with production beginning in Q4, 2009. The Havendale processor will boast these features :
- Based on the Nehalem microarchitecture
- Uses the new LGA1160 socket
- Supports Intel Turbo Boost Technology
- Supports Intel Hyper-Threading Technology
- 2 Cores, 4 Threads
- 4 MB Intel SmartCache
- Integrated memory controller supporting two DDR3 channels
- Integrated graphics (iGFX) core
- Discrete graphics support for a single 1x16 PCI Express 2.0 slot
- Supports the Intel Flexible Display Interface (FDI)
The Intel Flexible Display Interface will allow the integrated graphics core in the Havendale processor to channel its graphics data to the display controller in the future Ibex Peak (Intel 5-series) chipset for output to the monitor.
