The Samsung NX1 Masterclass Event

Yesterday, Samsung Malaysia invited me to join a select group of photographers to try out the new Samsung NX1 smart camera. If you recall, we covered the local launch of the Samsung NX1 back in December of 2014. In the NX1 Masterclass event, we will finally have some one-to-one time with the Samsung NX1.

The Samsung NX1 Masterclass was conducted by Yaman Ibrahim, the award-winning Malaysian photographer who specializes in portraits and sports photography. He will "attempt" to impart some of his knowledge using the Samsung NX1 in sports photography to us. To cater to that purpose, the event was conducted at the Extreme Park, Kompleks Sukan Rakan Muda Bukit Kiara, here in Kuala Lumpur.

Not only does this skateboarding court feature some really talented skateboarders (see the next page!), but Samsung Malaysia brought in three stunt cyclists to serve as our photography subjects. Here are two of the cyclists who would be helping us try out the Samsung NX1 using Yaman Ibrahim's tips.

Every attendee will receive a Samsung NX1 camera with a Samsung NX 16-50mm f/2-2.8 OIS lens and an accompanying Samsung Galaxy Alpha smartphone for the duration of the class. This is because the Samsung NX1 can be set to automatically pair with a Samsung smartphone using Bluetooth.

The automatic Bluetooth pairing feature is useful, but unfortunately, Samsung yet again decided to limit this feature to their own smartphones, just like what they did with the Samsung Gear S smartwatch. All other Android and iOS (obviously!) users can forget about previewing or downloading the full-sized photos right to their smartphones.

Here's my Samsung NX1 for the day! It's linked to the Samsung Galaxy Alpha smartphone for automatic previews and remote downloading of the photos by Bluetooth.

Mid-shoot, I actually suffered a minor collision with one of the riders who hit the camera with his handle. Fortunately, the Samsung NX1 was "shaken", but not stirred... LOL...
