The WD RE4-GP 2 TB

The WD RE4-GP 2 TB hard disk drive looks like any other 3.5" desktop hard drive, with a label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside.

The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model and capacity, and jumper settings. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Thailand in April 2009. The underside is SOP for Western Digital - completely bare of any surface-mounted components.

The label is also where you look for the drive's serial number in case you need to RMA it. Of course, we hope that never happens!

Usable Capacity

This Western Digital RE4-GP drive officially has a formatted capacity of 2,000,398 MB. We checked that out by formatting both in NTFS using Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 2,000,396,742,656 bytes. This is slightly (1.3 MB) lower than the official formatted capacity. With about 147 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity remained slightly above 2 TB.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
