The iPAQ h6300

This is Hewlett-Packard's first convergent device. Merging GSM/GPRS and Bluetooth capabilities with a WiFi-capable Pocket PC, the iPAQ h6300 is supposed to be the "complete all-in-one" device for the road warrior.

The h6300 supports a total of four GSM bands (GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz) so global roaming should not be a problem. It also comes with Bluetooth support, which is great since the h6300 is too large to use as a mobile phone directly without getting sued for being an insult to contemporary fashion.

It also comes with a detachable keyboard which further adds to the bulk. It is shown here attached to the base of the h6300. Although the picture below shows a Bluetooth earpiece, it does NOT come with the Bluetooth earpiece.

The keyboard is a nice addition. It allows you to easily type out SMS messages. Although you can remove it to reduce the h6300's bulk, you will probably end up just enduring the extra bulk, especially if you do a lot of SMS messaging!

Here is a picture of the h6300 in its cradle. Note that you cannot charge it with the keyboard installed.

The h6300 is no small Pocket PC. The demo unit had a substantial heft to it, probably because of the 3600mAh extended battery. While it will be lighter with the standard battery, I don't think it will last very long on the reduced battery capacity of 1800mAh.

The iPAQ h6300 is expected to hit the stores at the end of August or early September with a retail price of RM 2788 (USD 734).
