The 240 GB Intel 520 Series SSD

The 240 GB Intel 520 Series solid-state drive has the official part number of SSDSC2CW240. It looks identical to the earlier Intel X25-M G2 solid state drive because they both use the same cast aluminium chassis that conveniently doubles as a heatsink.

This is a 2.5" drive which will fit into any standard 2.5" drive bay, whether in a desktop PC or a notebook. Although it has a SATA 6 Gb/s interface, it will readily run on computers that only support SATA 3 Gb/s or even SATA 1.5 Gb/s. The downside is the drive will be throttled by the slower interface and will not perform to its full potential.

Usable Capacity

This Intel 520 Series solid state drive officially has a formatted capacity of 240 GB. We checked that out by formatting both in NTFS using Microsoft Windows 7.

The actual formatted capacity was 240,054,693,888 bytes. This is slightly (~54.7 MB) above than the official storage capacity. With about 101 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity was about 47 MB below 240 GB.

Let's take a look at its specifications.
