A Closer Look
The most striking thing about the Western Digital My Passport Studio is the E-label display on the front. This is an E Ink display so it works great even in sunlight. Most importantly, it uses very, very little power so it will keep displaying information even if you do not recharge the internal battery by connecting the drive to a USB or FireWire port for weeks or months.
The label is customizable, which is very useful if you have multiple My Passport Studio drives. It beats labelling them with stickers! The display also shows you how much space has been used, how much free space is available and the drive's encryption status. That's quite a lot of information one can glean from the display.
The My Passport Studio has dual interfaces. It supports both FireWire 800 as well as USB 2.0. At the bottom of the drive, you will find connectors for the two interfaces. The provided FireWire and USB cables are 46 cm (18") in length, including the connectors. For those who only have FireWire 400 ports, the kit includes a FireWire 800-to-FireWire 400 converter.
