Momentus 5400.2 FDE

Since notebooks are particularly prone to theft, especially post-World Cup, companies are leery of allowing sensitive data to be stored on them. To protect those who have to store sensitive data on their notebooks, Seagate introduces the Momentus 5400.2 FDE.

This is really nothing more than a standard Momentus 5400.2 notebook hard drive with integrated hardware-based full disc encryption. That's what FDE stands for - Full Disc Encryption.

By implementing hardware-based processing for this feature, the Momentus 5400.2 FDE can do full disc encryption without a loss in performance. It also ensures total security of any data stored in the drive.

Even if the notebook is stolen, the data on the drive cannot be accessed without the proper password. The data is therefore protected from unauthorized access no matter whether the drive was stolen, retired or resold.

The new Momentus 5400.2 FDE drives will be available in the first quarter of 2007 with capacities of up to 160GB. It will ship with both SATA 1.5Gb/s and Ultra ATA/100 interfaces.

Here is a list of its key features :

  • On-the-fly hardware-based full disc encryption
  • AES encryption which renders all data unreadable
  • Snoop-proof lock, using secure ATA commands
  • On-the-fly quick erase feature - allows companies to easily and quickly wipe out data and restore the drive to a clean condition
  • Preboot authentication
  • Seagate's proprietary DriveTrust technology enables higher security
  • Compatible with trusted platform modules (TPM)
