Scythe Ninja Plus Heatpipe CPU Cooler

Like other coolers in the Scythe line-up, the Scythe Ninja Plus is a really well-designed cooler. It pairs an innovatively-designed heatsink with a large and slow (but quiet) fan.

Now, heatsinks that use heatpipes are very much mainstream right now. But the Scythe Ninja with its six heatpipes has certainly taken this technology to the next level. Another advantage of its design is the fact that it supports practically all current processor platforms!

Thanks to the profligate use of heatpipes, the Scythe Ninja Plus demonstrated remarkable performance. Even when both the Scythe Ninja as well as the Thermalright XP-120 were using the slow but silent Scythe fan, the Ninja was able to trump the XP-120 by 2°C! This lead increased to 2.9°C when both heatsinks were equipped with the faster Panaflo fan.

However, we have to point out some deficiencies with this cooler. First and foremost, the packaging of the cooler leaves much to be desired. Especially when the heatsink base is damaged by the supplied mounting accessories. While we are on the topic of the base itself, it's sad to note that the base on the Scythe Ninja was not satisfactorily polished.

This is quite surprising since Scythe has been proven to be able to deliver mirror finishes in their past products. Although its performance was still stellar, one wonders just how much better the Ninja could have performance if it had a better polished base. Perhaps this is a problem exclusive to this batch. At least, we hope so!

Although its size was a factor for its success, you should be warned that it may not fit your case. It certainly couldn't fit the Coolermaster Praetorian case! If closing the case is important to you, be sure to check if the Scythe Ninja can fit your case before you buy it.

Finally, its heavy weight, while inevitable, may be a real concern for some. Heavy coolers have been known to kill motherboards and processors of unwary users! Fortunately, this cooler has a bottom-heavy design which reduces stress on the mount and the processor.

With that said , the Scythe Ninja Plus was a wonderful cooler to use and install. Installation was easy, except for the need to remove the motherboard just to put on the backplate. We hope Scythe will provide longer screws to correct that. It also delivers superb performance without resorting to a noisy fan.

Although it has its share of faults, there's no denying its remarkable performance. As such, we are happy to award the Scythe Ninja Plus our Reviewer's Choice Award! Congratulations, Scythe!

* Our New Review System

ARP is committed to developing new ways to improve your experience with us. As part of our continuous efforts to improve the value of our reviews to you, we are implementing a new review system.

This new review system is designed to allow you to quickly receive information on the latest hardware. This new system also allows you to quickly get the gist of the review without reading through it. This can be very useful, especially in situations where you need to make a quick purchase decision.

In this new system, we start with a Product Overview whenever a company sends us a press release about their latest product. We shift through extraneous PR-talk to create a straightforward summary of the product's features as well as specifications. This allows you to quickly find out all the pertinent details about the product, without reading through official press releases.

When we receive the product for review, we will quickly take photos of it and create a Pictorial Review. The purpose of a pictorial review is to allow you, the reader, to quickly examine the product visually. It may help you make better purchase decisions, especially if you cannot wait for the full review.

After thorough testing, we will post a Comprehensive Review of the product. This adds on to the pictorial review with comprehensive test results and our final conclusion on the product.

But no matter whether you are reading a Pictorial Review or a Comprehensive Review, you can always read the summary of the review as well as examine the product's specifications right on the first page. In all our new reviews, we will maintain the first page as a Product Overview page. If the product is listed in PriceGrabber, you can also check out the lowest price online.

We hope this new review system will make your experience a lot more enjoyable and informative!
