How Fast Is The Graphics Co-Processor?
Our source revealed very little details on the graphics co-processor, other than that it will be using the latest NVIDIA technology. He did however provide some test results based on simulations of such a Larrabee-GPU hybrid. Unfortunately, no details on the testbed were available. Here are two charts we created based on those simulated results.
So What Happens To NVIDIA?
Don't worry. NVIDIA isn't going anywhere. These things take time to conclude. Remember how long the AMD-ATI merger took? After the merger, NVIDIA will become Intel's new Graphics Processor division and they will continue to make and sell NVIDIA GPUs and graphics cards.
However, this is bad news for the engineers who have been working on the graphics circuitry for Intel's chipsets. Now that they have real engineers who know what they are doing, Intel should can these guys or assign them to something they can really do, like wash cars or scrub toilets.
It is also bad news for TSMC as Intel has excess fabrication capacity and is reportedly interested in rapidly shifting production from TSMC to their own foundries.
It is also bad news for NVIDIA CEO and President, Huang Jen-Hsun. Our source verified that he will not be part of the Intel family. Apparently, he will be announcing in May that he's "leaving to spend more time with his family" and "grow potatoes up north". Several other top executives at NVIDIA will similarly develop a sudden interest in their families and agriculture-related activities in May.
On the upside, Intel has agreed to codename the NVIDIA graphics co-processor to be used in the Larrabee processors "Huang" in honour of Mr. Huang's previous contributions and achievements.
