Western Digital AV-GP (WD30EURS) 3 TB Hard Disk Drive Review Rev. 2.0

The 3 TB Western Digital AV-GP

The Western Digital WD30EURS hard disk drive is based on the 3 TB Caviar Green (WD30EZRX) hard disk drive, albeit with a 3 Gbps SATA interface. Internally, both drives are the same, with the same platters and spindle speed.

Like many other 3.5" desktop hard drives, the WD30EURS has a label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside. The label has a lot of important information, like the hard drive model and capacity. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Thailand on 17 March, 2011.

Do note that while this is an Advanced Format drive, there is no warning about using WD Align with older operating systems like Windows XP. This is because this drive does not "support" older operating systems like Windows XP. You can use this drive in Windows XP or even Windows 98, but you will be limited to the first 2.1 TB.

Usable Capacity

This Western Digital AV-GP 3 TB hard disk drive officially has a formatted capacity of 3,000,592 MB. We checked that out by formatting it in NTFS using Windows Vista.

The actual formatted capacity was 3,000,457,224,192 bytes. This is slightly (457 MB) above than the official formatted capacity. With about 140 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity remained slightly above 3 TB.
