Transfer Rate Range

This chart shows you the range of platter-to-buffer transfer rates from the innermost track to the outermost track. In other words, it shows you the range of disk transfer rates of the hard drives (from minimum and maximum).

Western Digital rates the 4 TB Western Digital Blue SSHD with a peak throughput of 150 MB/s, but our test shows that it will actually hit 159 MB/s. This makes it slightly faster than the 4 TB Western Digital Red (WD40EFRX).

Even though the 4 TB Western Digital Blue SSHD uses the same platters as the 4 TB Western Digital Red (WD40EFRX), we can see from this chart that the Red drive has a slightly slower spindle speed, probably 5200 RPM.

Platter Transfer Rate Profile

The platter profile of the 4 TB Western Digital Blue SSHD we received was very good. There were no noticeable dips in throughput that would signify a significant use of replacement sectors. Lots of them would point to poor platter quality.

We also compared its platter profile to that of the 4 TB Western Digital Red (WD40EFRX), which uses the same 1 TB platters. You can see the Red drive is slightly slower across the platter. This points to a slightly slower spindle speed - probably just 5200 RPM.

Business Disk WinBench 99

Amazingly, the 4 TB Western Digital Blue SSHD beat all of the hard disk drives in this comparison, even the 6 TB Western Digital Black (WD6001FZWX), which is a very fast 7200 RPM hard disk drive with higher-density platters and 128 MB of DDR3L SDRAM cache!

Thanks to its 8 GB flash memory cache, the 4 TB Western Digital Blue SSHD is 34.5% faster than the 4 TB Western Digital Red.

High-End Disk WinBench 99

In the High-End test though, the 4 TB Western Digital Blue SSHD didn't top the class, but it came close to the performance of 7200 RPM hard disk drives like the the 4 TB Western Digital Red Pro.
