Moblin - Intel's Answer To Windows 7 Starter?

When we revealed Microsoft's plans to severely limit netbook specifications for the Windows 7 Starter edition, many were aghast that Microsoft would attempt to cripple the highly-popular netbook so that they would not cannibalize sales of their more expensive Windows 7 editions. On top of the rather ridiculous limitation of 1 GB of memory, Microsoft also limited the processor of netbooks running on Windows 7 Starter to single-core processors that do not exceed 2 GHz in frequency.

That must have bristled more than a few folks at Intel, especially since the new Atom 2 processor is expected to exceed 2 GHz in frequency, and Intel will also produce a dual-core version of the Atom 2 processor. In one fell swoop, Microsoft may have, intentionally or unintentionally, limited Windows 7 Starter edition to the current Intel Atom platform or its competitors.

It could have been a coincidence, but today, Intel also gave us a briefing on their Moblin project, which is Intel's project to create a Linux-based operating system for netbooks, nettops and other embedded systems. Although Moblin's main purpose is to be an open-source operating system optimized for the Intel Atom processor, Moblin also deftly allows Intel to bypass Microsoft's limitations for Windows 7 Starter edition.

With this announcement, Intel is publicly telling Microsoft, "Do what you like with Windows 7. We will get our partners to use Moblin instead." As Microsoft has yet to officially announce the hardware limitations (they only communicated them to their OEM partners), it isn't too late for Microsoft to take a step back and "adjust" those limitations to suit Intel's upcoming Atom 2 processor.
