Transfer Rate Range
This chart shows you the range of platter-to-buffer transfer rates from the innermost track to the outermost track. In other words, it shows you the range of disk transfer rates of the hard drives (from minimum and maximum).
It is obvious from this chart that both the 3 TB AV-GP (WD30EURS) and the 3 TB Caviar Green (WD30EZRX) are physically similar. They not only sport the same 750 GB platters but also the same spindle speed. Hence, both hard disk drives delivered the same transfer rate range of 59 MB/s at the innermost tracks to 128 MB/s at the outermost tracks.
The slightly higher spindle speed puts the two 3 TB hard disk drives a tad ahead of the older 2 TB Western Digital Caviar Green AFT (WD20EARS) hard disk drive. The WD20EARS has the same throughput at the outer tracks as the 3 TB drives, but the WD30EZRX and the WD30EURS won at the end, due to its better performance at the slower inner tracks.
Platter Transfer Rate Profile
The maximum platter transfer rate appeared to be about 134 MB/s which progressively dropped across the platter to about 52 MB/s at the last track. This drive has about 18 density zones. The platter quality seems to be very good in this sample, with only two dips that may suggest the use of replacement sectors.
As you can see, the new WD30EURS is significantly faster than the WD20EVDS. It starts at a much higher transfer rate and maintains its performance advantage all the way to the end.
