ED#100 : NVIDIA Responds To The ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2

Additional Points to Consider

* We believe many enthusiasts would appreciate the ability to purchase a powerful single-GPU card today, then upgrade to multi-GPU solutions in the future, without being forced into a multi-GPU products initially, and having to deal with possible scaling and profile issues.
* Odd that this point was not mentioned at the launch of the NVIDIA GX2 cards.

* We believe our products are more overclockable than the X2.
* The NVIDIA cards could be more overclockable, but all high-end cards (from both NVIDIA and ATI) are stupendously hot. Without cooler upgrades, it will be hard to significantly overclock these cards.

* We believe our products will be more readily available in the market than the X2.
* Time will tell. Similar predictions were made about the 4870 but supply sure is plentiful.

* We think a fewer number of larger, more powerful GPU chips will scale better in multi-GPU configurations than a larger number of smaller chips, such as with 4-way Crossfire.
* True, but isn't the Radeon HD 4870 a powerful GPU? It sure is faster than the GTX 260. Its smaller size is actually a bonus.

* We believe you may see 4-way Crossfire doesn’t scale very well across many games, and that 3-way SLI with GTX 280 and GTX 260 will scale quite well across more games and deliver excellent performance.
* Frankly speaking, nothing beats a single card or at most, two GPUs. 3-way SLI does not scale well at all and is actually slower than 2-way SLI in many games! To be fair though, there's really no real performance advantage in using more than 2 cards right now (even for ATI).

* If you compare the HD 4870 X2 to a single-GPU NVIDIA GTX 280 (which is the fastest single-GPU available today), remember that you will have no worries about multi-GPU scaling and profiles. The GTX 280 will provide excellent performance across all the popular games. Also we expect you'll see much better idle power and lower power consumption.
* Yes, the GTX 280 is currently the fastest single-GPU card but the 4870 is almost as fast and cost almost half as much. Therefore, it would be really unfair to compare the 4870 X2 to the GTX 280. It's overkill. However, the GTX 260 SLI consumes much less power than the 4870 X2 at load. When idling, both GTX 260 SLI and 4870 X2 consume almost the same amount of power.

* We've heard that 4870 X2s are quite heavy, and could pose shock and vibration problems if not secured well into systems.
* Isn't that true of ALL heavy cards? Surely NVIDIA's own heavy cards also need to be secured properly.
