The AMD Radeon R9 Nano

As technologically amazing as the Radeon R9 Fury X is, the smaller R9 Nano graphics card appears to have stolen the real show. The Radeon R9 Nano, which I dub the "Nano Nano" card in memory of Robin Williams, uses a cut-down version of the Fiji chip. This not only allows it to use a normal cooler, it also allowed the card to be even shorter at just 6 inches (15.25 cm).

The AMD Radeon R9 Fury X2

AMD also gave us a sneak preview of what the upcoming Radeon R9 Fury X2 would look like under its cooler. Of course, this is just an engineering sample that has not been finalised, but most of the key components are already in place - two AMD Fiji chips - each with 4 GB of HBM memory, a PLX Technology PEX8747 PCIe Gen. 3 switch, three DisplayPort outputs and a single HDMI output.

Despite the fact it features two large Fiji chips, the Radeon R9 X2 is still a very compact card. This is because the integration of the HBM stacked memory into the GPU package removed the space required to place multiple DDR5 memory chips on the PCB. This allows AMD to build a card with two GPUs using a PCB that is only about the size of that used by the single GPU Radeon R9 390 graphics card.

AMD confirms that both the Radeon R9 Nano and the Radeon R9 Fury X2 will ship by the end of this year. Officially, the Radeon R9 Nano will ship in Q3, with the Fury X2 shipping in the fall.
