The Hitachi CinemaStar 7K1000.C
The Hitachi CinemaStar 7K1000.C 500 GB hard disk drive looks like any other 3.5" desktop hard drive, with a label on the top plate and an uncovered PCB on the underside. The label has a lot of important information, like the drive capacity, and some specifications. There are also interesting details like its date and place of manufacture. This particular drive was manufactured in Shenzhen, China in December, 2009.
Do note that the type number (DS7SAC500) actually refers to two different 500 GB models - this CinemaStar drive and a Deskstar drive (HDS721050CLA362). Both drives are similar mechanically, with the only differences being their firmware and cache sizes - the CinemaStar drive comes with a 8 MB cache while Deskstar drive has a 16 MB cache.
The underside has a small PCB right next to the SATA connectors. Unlike Western Digital, Hitachi prefers to leave everything "hanging in the open". Not only are the surface-mounted components exposed, so is the cable connecting the PCB to the drive spindle motor. That makes them somewhat susceptible to damage from static and rough handling.
Usable Capacity
This Western Digital CinemaStar 7K1000.C drive officially has a formatted capacity of 500,107,862,016 bytes. We checked that out by formatting both in NTFS using Windows Vista.
The actual formatted capacity was 500,105,736,192 bytes. This is slightly (2.1 MB) lower than the official formatted capacity. With about 109 MB allocated to the NTFS file system, the actual usable capacity was slightly (3.4 MB) below 500 GB.
Let's take a look at its specifications.
