ED#154 : Apple App Store's 5th Anniversary Freebies!
To celebrate the App Store's 5th Anniversary on the 10th of July, Apple has tied up with some app developers to give away some really great apps! Here's their official statement :From the 500 apps available at launch in 2008 to the more than 900,000 at your fingertips today, it's been a remarkably prolific five years for the App Store. To celebrate, we're giving everyone five landmark games and five groundbreaking apps for a limited time. Plus, look back at the key moments that have made the App Store the world's most innovative destination for apps.
Update @ 11/07/2013 : We just had a very interesting talk with an iOS game developer about these freebies. Apparently, Apple reached out to the top iOS app developers in January 2013 to give their apps away for free or at very special discounts, to celebrate the App Store's 5th anniversary and the fact that the App Store was expected to hit 50 BILLION downloads by then. Apple hit the mark early, with the 50th billionth app downloaded on the 16th of May, 2013.
The app developers had to sign a special NDA because in return for the freebies and discounts, Apple would work out some favours for them. Although our source did not want to reveal the exact terms, it was hinted that getting featured on the App Store was one of those favours.
