Knowing Thine Browser's Vulnerabilities
It's all fine and dandy to know which browser is the safest, but things change and conditions can shift from one to the other in a matter of minutes when code is edited or a vulnerability is discovered. To keep yourself safe, it's important to keep updated on your browser's vulnerabilities. Even the safest browser will have new vulnerabilities exposed from time to time.
I will show you just how to do that in this section. Don't worry. I've factored in the fact that not all of us are programmers, or security consultants at that. But we can count on people who do that and provide such information for free. My favourite hangout for such things would have to be Secunia.com.
Looks confusing? It doesn't have to be. I'll give you a simple step-by-step guide on getting a list of vulnerabilities of any software you are interested in.
-
Click the “Listed by Vendor” option on the Securnia Advisories sub-section on the left navigation bar.
- Look for the company that writes that particular piece of software you want checked out. For example, Firefox is made by the Mozilla Foundation.
- Select the particular program and the version that you want checked out (see picture above).
- Now all you have to do is to click List all, and a list of problems (for which patches are available or not available) will be displayed.
See? Wasn't that simple? Now, just repeat the steps above for the other programs you're using and you can get a pretty good idea of the security problem you might be facing.
Still want it simpler? Well, there's a widget available for people who have software that support widgets. It keeps a live report on the security situation on all major Internet browsers while you surf the Internet.
See the widgets? Well, widgets have tons of functions like getting live news, being calculators and stuff. But in this case, a widget called Stay Secure can give you live feeds on the security situation of various browsers and their vulnerabilities. LOL.. the world is getting too easy these days.
My advice is to just install multiple browsers and use whichever has the least number of security holes. That way, you get the benefit of various different browsers and security from the most secure browser at that point in time. Now, if i could just find a widget that can grab me the best links to free smut, I'll be set for life.
